High Fibre, Low Fat Diet

HIGH FIBRE, LOW FAT DIET HELPS REDUCE CANCER

(As per Dr Giovannucci research finding) :

  • .More strong evidence that a diet high in fibre and low in fat reduces the risk of developing growths in the intestine that lead many years later to colon cancer.
  • He found that those  who ate a diet high in fat and low in fibre had a four times greater chances of developing the polyps that can develop into cancer as much as 10 years later.
  • Dr Giovannucci and his colleagues examined food surveys of 7,284 male health professionals aged 46 to 81 and compared them  with later tests for intestinal polyps. Reporting on the study : the results support recommendations to substitute chicken and fish for red meat and to eat more fruits, vegetables and grains.
  • Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and scientists have suspected the high incidence is due to low fibre consumption.  There were 155,000 new cases of the disease in 1990.
  • Americans consume about 13gm of fibre a day. Men in the study who were found to have one-third the risk of polyp growth  averaged about 28gm a day.
  • The researchers said differences in diet might account for 90% of the variation among countries in incidence of colon cancer.
  • Previous studies have linked diet to intestinal cancer, but the Giovannucci study is the first to show the relationship between diet and the growth of polyps.
